California Window Tint Laws: What You Need to Know for Homes, Cars, and Businesses
Estimated read time: 5 minutes
California has some of the clearest window tinting regulations for vehicles in the country, but many people don't realize that homes and commercial buildings have their own set of considerations — primarily around HOA restrictions, building codes, and historic district guidelines rather than state law.
Automotive Window Tint Laws in California
California Vehicle Code § 26708 governs aftermarket window film on passenger vehicles. Windshield tint film is allowed only on the top 4 inches. Front side windows (driver and passenger) must have 70% or higher Visible Light Transmission (VLT). Rear side windows and the rear window have no VLT restriction for passenger vehicles.
Residential Window Tinting: HOA and Local Considerations
Many Homeowners Associations in Los Angeles have exterior appearance guidelines that apply to window modifications. These often specify the allowable reflectance level of window film visible from outside the home.
